Fall Bedding: Layer by Layer

Though it never gets very cold here in Palm Beach, I still enjoy swapping in some cozier layers this time of year. These pieces are versatile and would work well in colder climates. Let’s break them down one by one and see how they help create a beautiful, functional Fall bed.

Bamboo Sheets

I talk about these sheets often and have lost count of how many people I’ve converted to bamboo. Bamboo is a sustainable fabric that is both breathable and great at temperature control. Bamboo sheets are incredibly soft and have a great, luxurious drape to them. This particular company is my favorite (Oprah’s, too!). Sheets are arguably the most important layer of any bed since they make direct contact with your skin. If you have the budget to splurge a little, make sure it’s on the sheets!

Temperature Regulating Bed Blanket

The next layer is this bamboo bed blanket. It’s a cozier option than our summer weight waffle linen blanket but I find that it still keeps me at the perfect temperature, no sweating. It’s also so soft. It feels like a baby blanket! This company makes their bedding extra wide, so it’s perfect for deeper mattresses.

Breathable Duvet

We don’t generally need a duvet here but I do like to make one available to guests just in case. It’s also the layer that we let our dogs sleep on because it’s easy to clean. This one is a linen duvet cover with an all-season insert. In the summer, I fold the duvet in thirds at the foot of the bed. In the winter, I pull it all the way up. Linen is highly breathable and naturally anti-microbial which means less washing. The downside to linen is that it can take years to naturally soften up, so I generally opt to use it on upper layers of my bed (i.e. the ones that don’t touch your skin.)

Lightweight Throw Blanket

You may have noticed by now that my Fall bedding consists of several light weight layers rather than one or two really warm ones. Making your bed this way allows you to control your sleeping temperature more accurately since you can easily add or remove layers throughout the season (and over the course of each night.) The final layer on my Fall bed is this lightweight throw blanket. It’s an easy-to-manage layer that you can pull up over yourself in the middle of the night if you start to feel chilled. It also looks great 😉
