Holiday Hosting: Getting your guest room ready

I’m sure many of us have already seen our first round of holiday guests. I take guest hosting very seriously in our house because I love nothing more than a house full of family and friends. I put a lot of thought in to our guest space to keep them coming back. Here are my 6 best tips:

Lots of bedding options

For bedding, I opt for lots of light layers so that guests have plenty of options for staying comfortable. On our guest bed, I have sateen sheets, a thin bed blanket and a heavier quilt folded at the end of the bed. For pillows, I have one soft and one firm for each person.

Speaking of linens, if you have a full-house during the holidays, set out towels in different colors, patterns or textures so that everyone can keep track of theirs. Install extra hooks in the bathroom and in their bedrooms.

A place to sit

Chances are, there’s a lot going on in your home over the holidays. Give your guests a quiet place to kick up their feet. A small desk gives them a place to write or read. If you hang a mirror above the space, it doubles as a vanity where guests can get ready for festivities without having to wait for the restroom to free up.

A spot for luggage

Make sure there is plenty of room for guests to stash away their luggage when not in use. I keep a thick quilt at the foot of the bed so guests can unpack their luggage without worrying about getting the bedding dirty. I also have a small bench in the closest that doubles as a luggage stand and a place to put on your shoes.

A place for clothing

On the same note, make sure there is plenty of empty drawer and/or closest space for guests to organize their things. I keep lots of empty hangers in the closet, a hamper and a tray for jewelry and accessories. I keep the nightstand drawers are empty except for a few useful gadgets like extra phone chargers and ear plugs.

Things to pass the time

Creating a true retreat for your guests means giving them more than just the necessities. Invite them to relax and fully enjoy their space by bringing in novels or coffee table books, candles and even small games.

A guest book!

I have had the same guest book for almost 15 years now. It’s so cool to look back and see all of the memories we’ve made in our home! I leave ours open on the desk when guests arrive. If you’re having a party, you could also leave it out on the coffee table.
