Hey neighbors! Rugs are some of the most asked about items in our home and someone recently requested a rug guide. I thought it was a great idea, so here it is!

Helpful Tips:

  • When choosing a rug size, it helps to consider the dimensions of the floor space rather than basing it on your furniture. Rugs are intended as floor coverings rather than islands for your furniture. Often times, a larger rug is better because it helps establish visual cohesiveness where smaller rugs might chop up a space.
  • I generally opt for a rug that contrasts with the furniture. I love a monochrome look – but a contrasting rug seems to give a space so much depth!
  • There are so many rug materials to choose from. I love using synthetic flat weaves in areas like the kitchen because they don’t trap crumbs and are super easy to clean. Rugs with stiff backings do well under heavy furniture because they don’t bunch up. Wool, while generally the most expensive option, is also the most durable and repels stains. A wool rug can last decades or more!

Size: 4 x 6

Material: Jute

Jute is often recommended for high-traffic areas since its natural fibers are very sturdy. This one has been perfect for our entryway. A note on jute: it can be difficult to get stains out and they tend to collect a lot of dust and dirt underneath.

Our living room rug is handwoven and incredibly soft! It’s much bluer in person than the shop photos suggest but I still think it’s absolutely beautiful.

Material: Polyester

This rug is a printed flat-weave made to look like a vintage rug. The muted colors brought so much character and warmth to this otherwise modern space. This rug doesn’t trap crumbs and is really easy to clean (I use dish soap and a garden hose in the driveway!)

Material: Synthetic

This rug feels like a silk rug but for a fraction of the cost! It also has a stiff backing which keeps it from bunching up under the weight of the furniture. It’s subtle blues and oranges were perfect for our breezy bedroom. We even have a painting in similar colors – they make each other pop!

I got this runner at Home Goods but have linked a great lookalike made from the same material.

This is a smaller version of the rug in our guest bedroom. I can’t believe how different it looks in different sizes! If you check out the one in our guest room, you’ll notice that this one looks significantly more charcoal in comparison. Still, it’s a favorite of mine.

I didn’t follow my own advice here and sized my rug to the furniture. I wasn’t ready to spend the money on a large rug – especially since we are in a rental and I have no idea what (if any) our office space will be like in the next house. I think a larger rug would have really brought this entire space together nicely.

Indoor/Outdoor rugs are so beautiful these days! They make a lot of sense in a bathroom or mudroom.

This rug has definitely had it’s 15 minutes of fame! I see it everywhere now and for good reason. It’s a beautiful rug with lots of versatile, rich colors. Note that is does look different in person than in the online photos. It also fades from blue to olive, so the direction in which you lay it out really makes a difference.

I’m often asked whether or not I think these are comparable to an actual vintage rug. Truthfully, there is no replacement for the impeccable detail and quality material that go in to a real vintage rug. The flat weave prints are meant to be an affordable option that mimics the look of a vintage. However, they feel nothing like a hand woven rug and it can be obvious up close that it’s printed. I think they are beautiful but if you are used to vintage or real wool and have the budget for it, I say go vintage!
