Restoration Hardware Cloud Sofa – Initial Review

We ordered our RH Cloud sectional sofa in April of 2022 and received it at the end of July. We have been debating this purchase for quite a while because we didn’t really love the sofa setup we had (you can read my review of our Maiden Home Dune here and our Sixpenny Gabriel here.) We wanted something more comfortable for tv watching since this is the only room in the house that has a tv. Don’t worry, though! All of the existing furniture has been moved to our front room which has sat empty since we moved in.

We considered so many different options, but ultimately kept going back to the RH showroom and deciding each time that the cloud was still the most comfortable.

Sofa specs:

After working with The Havenly on a living room layout (use code goldcoastcanvas for 25% off!), we were sold on the idea of a sectional. This would accomplish a few of our goals: it is more space efficient, it offers plenty of seating and maximizes tv-facing seats.

We chose the bench seat option because I preferred the cleaner, seamless look and we didn’t think we would need the flexibility of the modular collection. We chose a left-arm sofa as our add on piece, ensuring that there was no seam running across the portion that is perpendicular to the tv. The sofa is 9′ by 10′ (the piece that is perpendicular to the tv is 9′) We chose the luxe depth, which is a whopping 48″ deep, making this a fairly large sofa overall. We chose the luxe depth because we wanted a loungey sofa that would have room for us to lay back and curl up on.

I knew I wanted white, especially for this room which can feel a bit dark because our backyard is surrounded by a wall of palm trees. I tested many of RH’s white fabrics and settled on the Brushed Belgian Flax Linen Cotton. It repelled liquid better than any other fabric I tried. Liquid rolls right off of it and not one spec of moisture remains. The downside is that this fabric is dry-clean only. All covers are completely removable (including the cover on the frame) so it isn’t too big of an issue, but definitely less convenient than machine washable fabrics. The upside is that it repels stains so well and it’s incredibly soft – like velvet but with the breezy look of linen.

We chose the feather fill because I wanted that “sink in” feeling that is difficult to achieve with poly fill. RH does use a liner to prevent feather migration but it is silent and not crinkly at all (unlike our Sixpenny.)

Ordering & Delivery

The ordering process was very straightforward. We ordered online but you can always get help at a showroom if you live near one. RH doesn’t always get the best reputation, but I have found their employees to be incredibly helpful. We have ordered several pieces from RH now and their delivery teams are always top-notch. They are punctual, polite and very careful. I always get prompt updates throughout the delivery window and RH follows up with me after the delivery. We have had a few pieces arrive with imperfections, but the delivery team always handles the calls with customer care and they always allow me to keep the damaged pieces until they can replace it.

Luckily, our sofa arrived in perfect condition.

First Impressions

This sofa is so comfortable. We have friends who have Cloud dupes and they say that theirs is nothing compared to the real deal. I think there are plenty of great options out there, but there’s just something about the Cloud that is perfectly proportioned and perfectly under-stuffed for ultimate comfort.

It does need fluffing. There’s just no way around it. Since it’s a slightly under-stuffed feather sofa, it won’t bounce back after it’s compressed. There are hooks that keep the cushions in place and they pull the covers taught which does help a bit. Our sofa faces the back of our house and it takes me less than two minutes to fix it up, so I don’t find it to be an issue at all.

The fabric we chose is thicker and sturdier than their standard linen or cotton options and does not hold wrinkles. I think that helps mitigate that “messy” look that some people complain about. It is supposed to soften up over time and it has significantly in just the few months that we’ve had it. It really feels like super soft velvet! I haven’t noticed any staining or discoloring but I imagine, like with anything, body oils and other dirt will collect over time and be noticeable. If I only have to dry clean it once or twice a year, I’d be perfectly happy! I am tempted to try at-home dry cleaning with one of the pillow covers just to see if it would be ok (technically, that’s not an option for “dry clean only” so I’m still debating.) I’ll keep you updated. Stay tuned for more…
